About this Workshop...
Have you ever wanted to write your own poem, speak your mind, or perform your words on stage?
This relaxed and exciting two-hour workshop invites teenagers to explore spoken word poetry, develop their own ideas, and discover the power of their own voice. Guided by poet, performer, entertainer, and lover of all things wordy David Hynes, participants will be encouraged to create an original poem or spoken word piece based on whatever matters to them — from music, friendship, identity, school, and everyday life to bigger issues they feel passionate about.
During the workshop, David will offer practical advice on shaping ideas into strong, expressive writing, as well as tips on how to present work to an audience. Participants can choose to read from the page or perform from memory, depending on what feels most comfortable.
By the end of the session, everyone will have the chance to share their work in a friendly, supportive setting. For some, this may be their first time performing their own words aloud; for others, it could be the start of something much bigger.
Spoken word is one of today’s most exciting creative movements, appearing on festival stages, social media platforms, schools, and venues around the world. Many singers, writers, actors, and performers began by simply standing up and sharing their words.
David Hynes brings energy, humour, and experience to the workshop. He is host of Spoken Word at The Word Tent in MindField and co-founder of The Poetry Kiln, The Rising Tide, and A-musing.
No experience needed — just bring your ideas, curiosity, and voice.
David Hynes
David Hynes is a poet, entertainer, and lover of all things wordy. He is the coordinator, orchestrator, conductor, curator, and host of Spoken Word at The Word Tent in MindField, where he helps bring voices, stories, rhythm, humour, and performance together in a vibrant celebration of spoken word.
A co-founder of The Poetry Kiln, The Rising Tide, and A-musing, David has long been involved in creating spaces where writers, performers, and audiences can connect through language and live performance. His work is rooted in a love of words, a belief in the power of expression, and a gift for encouraging others to step up, speak out, and be heard.
And while David doesn’t like people who talk about themselves in the third person, festival bios leave him very little choice.
