Don Mortell, an accomplished artist with a background in illustration, is widely recognised for his significant contributions to promoting arts and culture in Mullingar. As the passionate host of a podcast, Don provides listeners with an intimate look into the lives and motivations of artists and creators, exploring their influences, experiences, and driving forces. His podcast has become a vital platform for emerging and mid-career artists who may not yet have widespread recognition, emphasising the importance of supporting living artists.

Through his engaging interviews, Don has highlighted a variety of creators, including Cúige founders Andrea Cullen and Rachel Coyne, poet and storyteller Paul Timoney, filmmaker Liam Hall Walshe, and painter Olivia Finn. In 2023, he continues to explore the stories of new artists and creators, learning alongside his listeners and allowing them to share their passion and joy for their craft. This dedication to promoting individual artists not only showcases their work but also highlights their personal journeys, making their art more relatable and accessible to the public.

Beyond his podcast, Don Mortell is deeply involved in the local arts scene. He is the project coordinator for The MullingART Project, a community-based arts initiative started in 2010. This project aims to adorn the town of Mullingar with vibrant art pieces during the summer, transforming the windows of local shops and businesses into a “24/7 people’s art gallery.” This initiative has significantly contributed to the cultural landscape of Mullingar, making art a visible and integral part of the community.

Don is also a talented pyrography artist, creating intricate artworks by burning images onto wood under the name Pyromaniax. His unique art form has garnered attention and admiration, adding another dimension to his creative repertoire.

Looking forward, Don Mortell will play a pivotal role in the upcoming Mullingar Literary Festival. On Thursday, August 1st, at Caffreys on Mount Street, he will host “In Conversation with Don,” where he will engage in discussions with special guests Patricia Gibney, Anne Griffin, and Dolores Keaveney. This event is set to be a highlight of the festival, providing an insightful and engaging experience for attendees.

Through his various endeavours, Don Mortell continues to be a driving force in promoting arts and culture in Mullingar, fostering a vibrant and inclusive artistic community.
